Hildegard of Bingen, Moon and the horoscope of conception

A couple of weeks ago I attended a lecture about Tithi organized by our Italian Astrological Association. I’m absolutely new to Vedic astrology, so I will take the definition from Wikipedia, I don’t know more than this in fact. A Tithi is “a lunar day, or the time it takes for the longitudinal angle between the moon and the sun to increase by 12°“: obviously every Moon day has its Moon Goddess who implies a particular aspect of activity and a particular fate.

Some days after the lecture for some strange coincidence I stumbled upon a book written by the Medieval philosopher, theologian, herbalist, composer, visionary Hildegard of Bingen and I found exactly the same method of calculating lunar days, a Tithi coming from our Medieval astrological tradition .

Born in 1098, the Prioress of the Benedictine convent of Disibodenberg in Germany is famous for being a great expert of natural secrets as of celestial truths. She knew the secrets of herbs, of bodies, of music as well of God things. Soon after her death, all her works left the Convent for Rome in order to start the process of Sanctification, let alone the ones for which she is famous and that are more connected to her fame as herborist and doctor, Physica and Causae et curae.

In the last pages of Causae et Curae, Hildegard wrote a detailed horoscope for all the 30 lunar days of conception. The following text is the translation of her pages; calculations, examples and mistakes come obviously from me.

Western “Tithi” is very easy to calculate . Let’ s see how.

EXAMPLE I

Let’s take the chart of Elisabeth II as first example. She was born on 21st April 1926 in London.

Solar Fire gives as conception date – according the natural method of Trutine of Hermes (Centiloquium, aphorism n.51) the 6th of July 1925.

Now we should calculate how many signs and degrees are between the Moon and the Sun and in this way we could have the lunar days. Sun at 14 Cancer, while Moon has just passed the opposition, and she is at 24 Capricorn, so there are 6 signs and 10 degrees.

Now I will check the table – it is a little variation from Lilly table for Trutine of Hermes 🙂

So six degrees and 1o degrees are 15 days.

For a quicker result we can use a tithi calculator, it’s the same calculation.

Again our calculator says that Elisabeth was conceived on the 15th lunar day.

So now we known as we should calculate Tithi, and we can go on reading what Hildegard wrote in 1100 AD about lunar day of conception of Elisabeth II.

The 15TH Moon: The native conceived in this Moon……..if a woman, will be praised and she always will love new things, she will be honoured but easily she will lose her way for God’s things, if she will not honour Him.

Is it proper for the British Queen? Considering that Hildegard is writing in a moment when women hardly can be honoured, it seems me so.

EXAMPLE II

The second example comes from my personal archive. It’s a day chart so let’s start considering diurnal planets Jupiter and Saturn.

Jupiter is very strong in this chart, in its heliacal rising and just a couple of degrees from MC. And Ptolemy about this Jupiter can write: “When Jupiter alone has dominion of the mind, and is gloriously situated, he renders it generous, gracious, pious, reverent, joyous, courteous, lofty, liberal, just, magnanimous, noble, self-acting, compassionate, fond of learning, beneficent, benevolent, and calculated for government.” And generally: “Oriental stations, and positions on the mid-heaven, or culminations, make men reflective, constant, of good memory, firm, prudent, magnanimous, successful in pursuing their desires, inflexible, powerful in intellect, strict, not easily imposed upon, judicious, active, hostile to crime, and skilful in science.”

Saturn, the Ascendant ruler, is not so well situated, being at his cosmical setting (so retrograde). Stuck at IC, like every day planet in a day chart below the horizon, is against its sect and it cannot work so well as we saw for Jupiter. Ptolemy writes: if thus connected and posited ingloriously, he makes men outrageous, incapable of learning, timorous, highly superstitious, yet regardless of religion, suspicious, averse to children, incapable of friendship, cunning, misjudging, faithless, foolishly wicked, irascible, hypocritical, idle and useless, without ambition, yet regretful, morose, highly reserved, over-cautious, and dull. (Tetrabiblos, III. 18 )

Is this like that? Exactly so.

The native has one of more brilliant minds I ever saw, while we videmus nunc per speculum et in aenigmate – as Saint Paul and Umberto Eco remember us 🙂 but in the same time stubborn and persistent in supporting the silliest things I ever heard in my life, and against every evidence and reason and common sense.

What does Hildegard say abot this native?

Let’s come back to Solar Fire and let’s calculate the conception day, then we can insert that date in the Tithi calculator or we can calculate by hand with the table. Sun is at 14 Aquarius, while Moon at 2 Capricorn, between them 10 signs and 18 degrees, i.e. it should the 26th lunar day, or Thiti as it’s called in Jyotisha.

Anyway considering that the Moon can stay more or less than 2 days in a sign and that this one is more proper to the native I will prefer the 25th day:

The native conceived in this Moon, if a man, will be proud and godless, and he would be wise if pride and impiety would not waste his cleverness as the wind dispels ashes. He is like one who wants more than he owns, like a ship which does not want stay in the water, his arrogance eventually will damage him.

Exactly what I believe.

Let me know please if Hildegard astrological method works with your charts. It could be interesting investigate a little.

Below the video the complete list of the Moon days from Hildegard book, Causes and Cures.

The 1ST Moon
The native conceived in the first Moon- when the Moon receives her light from the Sun – if a man, will be proud and hard hearted, and he will love just those who would fear and honour him, he will he happy in spreading malicious gossips about his fellows, about their honour and their riches; he will be healthy and he will not suffer serious diseases, but he will not reach a very old age.
If a woman, she will desire to be honoured; she will be loved more from strangers than her relatives, she will neglect herself and she will always love newcomers, but she will be wicked with her family and will not care of it. The 5TH Moon
The native conceived in this Moon, if a man, will be honest and trustworthy, bold and persevering, healthy in the body, and will live quite a lot. If a woman, she will be resolute as a man, she will be quarrelsome and revengeful, but honest: sometimes she will suffer from some light sickness, and she could live a lot.

The native conceived in this Moon, if a man, will be good hearted and will be pleasant, effeminate and weak like a woman, he will easily fall sick and will die soon. If a woman she will be honest and dear to her fellows, and she will be healthy, but she did not live a lot.

The 7TH Moon
The native conceived in this Moon, if a man, will be silly and without wisdom, but he will think to be wise, without being like that; he will not be loved by his fellows, he will have strong veins and he will be not often sick, but when ill he will suffer and be sad, and he will live a lot. The 11TH Moon
The native conceived in this Moon, if a man, will be choleric and unhappy, he will not love women and he neither will be healthy or he will live too much. The 15TH Moon
The native conceived in this Moon, if a man, will be honoured and in happiness, and everything he does it will be successful and he will not fail, whatever good or evil works, because he is conceived in the fullness of the Moon; and he will be healthy and he will not live a long life. If a woman, she will be praised and she always will love new things, she will be honoured but easily she will lose her way because of God’s things, if she will not honour Him; she will often be sick but soon will recover and her life will be not so long.

The 16TH Moon
The native conceived in this Moon, if a man, will be an ordinary man, his ways are not pleasant and he will be disliked by his fellows; he will have no success in his activities, but he will be so proud that he will be always well provided, and he will be not easily sick, and he will live till the old age. If a woman, she will be silly, quarrelsome and choleric, but sometimes with a good nature and for this reason she will be loved: she will be sick with convulsions, and so she will be mad, and she will not live a long time, but she will be quite old.

He will be healthy and he will have a long life. If a woman, she will be cunning, she will have a fox heart and never will say what is in her heart: following her wicked heart, she will deceive honest men with her words, and in the case they could die because of her. She is healthy in her body, but sometimes she can be mad. She can live a very long time. But this behaviour, both in man and in woman, is unpleasing to God.

  1. Hi Margherita

Your article is, like the heroine, really fascinating! I wonder if Hildegarde was not (also) an expert in astrology. She never spoke about the Art, but with her healing techniques, based upon precious stones and herbs, I guess she knew perfectly the topic.
But a question arises: what were her sources of information?
    Do you have some idea?

    love
    Pat

  2. Well, I should thank you and give public credit for the Dragon’s herb, before replying.

I agree with you, she should know astrology, in the first part of Causes and Cures she talks about the sky and planets and about the zodiacal signs, but she seems more interested in the practical work with temperaments, herbs and diseases.
I don’t exactly which are her sources, but I read she entered in a Benedictine convent when she was 8, and Benedictine centres were the most important centres for amanuensis activities.

Now you are forgetting Umberto Eco’s “The name of the Rose”: Adso was a Franciscan monk but the murders occured inside a Benedictine monastery 🙂 It seems that Benedictine monasteries were particulary famous for their interest for herbs and medicine. In 820 AD they opened an hospital in Salerno, from which derived the famous medieval medical school.

I believe Hildegard learnt there. Moreover she was a woman, and it seems that those kind of activities were left to women, till when the first universities were opened; when it become an official culture, it was closed for women 😦

The other famous doctor woman was Trotula, I believe she was the wife of Platearius, the author of the Circa Instans. She wrote many books about women illness, and from a quick look to Hildegard’s book, it seems to me that Hildegard was very interested about the same subject. In every case she lived in a convent with other nuns, if I think a little it’s obvious – i’m elaborating while I’m replying to you, I should still think a little, i was more concentrated about Lunar days, but I believe there is a lot of interesting stuff in the book.

    Love,
    margherita

  3. Hi Mergherita
I read this with great interest and spent some time trying to locate the tithi interpreations from Hindu astrology so we could campare what they say with waht you have written above.
Here is the list of fifteen tithis. Tithi 16 would be 180-168 degrees and would be number 1 on the list, 17 would be number 2 and so on…

1st Prathipada The person born in this lunar day will have a good wife and also enjoy extra-marital relationships .
2nd Dwiteeya The person born on this day will seek the truth. This person will be liked by all and will be skilled in using weapons.
3rd Triteeya Those born on this day will be immoral and will be after immoral women. They will be bent on harming others.
4th Chaturthi Those born on this day will be greedy and will not be helpful to others. They will also be secretive.
5th Panchami Those born on this day will be intelligent and live long. They will have strong moral character.
6th Shrashti Those born on this day will have more male issues. They will be after sensual pleasures and will have a big circle of friends.
7th Saptami Those born on this day will be rich and will have good character. They will respect elders and learned men.
8th Ashtami The person born on this day will be faithful to the spouse, shall have many interests and speak well.
9th Navami Those born on this day will be passionate and courageous. They will be interested in arts and will be deadly to their opponents.
10th Dasami Those born on this day will be highly successful in business pursuits. They will be well-versed in sciences .
11th Ekadasi Those born on this day will be unprincipled. They are jealous of other’s progress. Their mind will be occupied by thoughts of women.
12th Dwadasi The person born on this day will be popular with women and amass wealth. This person will have many enemies .
13th Trayodasi The person born on this day will have wide circle of relatives and will make them happy. This person will be pure at heart, enjoy good health .
14th Chaturdasi Those persons born on this day will have a healthy body and a great personality. They will have convictions of their own on everything.
15th(Bright half) Pournami The person born on this day will keep long hair, live up to 80 years of age and will be efficient in all undertakings.
15th (Dark half) Amavasya The person born on this day will become deadly to opponents and will enjoy a good life.

I wonder if this kind of analysis came from Al Biruni’s knowledge of astrology, as he travelled both east and west extensively collecting astro techiniques. Some of the many interpretations of tithis which I have read seem to reflect some of the meanings given in your write up above.
    Thanks for sharing this
    love and light

  4. Very kind of you, really.
As I wrote in my post, I just attended by chance a lecture about the subject, and then I found this in St. Hildegard. It looks very similar or changed in position with the nearer ones.
I found this for example when I studied similarities between the chapter of Paranatellonta in the Spanish book of Alphonse the Wise and Abano’s Astrolabium Planum.

In fact for my archive case it could be proper both the 10th and 11th mansion. (25-15=10)
10th Dasami Those born on this day will be highly successful in business pursuits. They will be well-versed in sciences .
11th Ekadasi Those born on this day will be unprincipled. They are jealous of other’s progress. Their mind will be occupied by thoughts of women.

The native in fact has a beautiful mind, I would lie if I do not write this, but he is very jealous of others’ things, even when facts are not dependant on those people. And he has just the words “Mine, My, Me” on his mouth. It’s a pity because there is more than this in him.

Queen Elisabeth’s case is easier, the Full Moon is a special day for every culture.

Many thanks again, I will copy your list in my archive.

  5. DOB 13 April 1963 @4:10pm Bryn Mawr, PA currently living in Kyrene, aka West Chandler, AZ at N33.19’34” W111.56.’51” Please help, I’m running out of time!!
